November 19th is World Toilet Day. Although mainly about providing toilet facilities in places where there are none, it is also a day to focus the mind on everyone’s need to be able to find and use a public toilet, when out and about. This can be especially difficult for people with special needs.
Finding a Toilet
Bromley has a scheme whereby places with public facilities such as cafes, cinemas, supermarkets etc. will allow their facilities to be used regardless of whether any money is being spent. They are paid an allowance by the Council to cover toilet paper, cleaning etc. There is a list of these organisations on the Council website. There should also be a sign on the outside of the organisation, to let you know, but they can be difficult to spot.
There is a website https://www.toiletmap.org.uk which gives information about public facilities when you put in a postcode. This may not be up to date.
When adult changing facilities are needed Google “Changing Places Toilets or Changing Places Consortium” entering your postcode for a local map.
Accessible toilets are sometimes kept locked. individuals with a permanent or non-visible disability who need independent access can purchase their own Radar key from Disability Rights UK. They will have to provide proof of need. Carers can also purchase a key to help manage facilities.
Dementia Friendly Toilets
This information is to help organisations which provide public facilities to ensure that their toilet provision is as dementia friendly as possible within the constraints of cost. Remember “What helps people with dementia helps us all”.
- Clear signage, text and images, including guidance to find the toilets and also guidance in returning to a table, sitting area etc.
- Good lighting.
- High contrast colours between floors, walls and fixtures including non white toilet seats, preferably blue or black
- Clear pathways. Avoid passage close to modern hand driers which can set them functioning!
- Door handles and locks which are easy to handle and locks which can be opened quickly from outside.
- Simple to use taps with clear hot and cold indicators. NB if complicated sources of water already installed, provide clear instructions.
- Clear instructions on how to unlock the lid if providing energy efficient toilets.
- Please do not use mirrors as decorative features as there is the possibility of perceptual problems. Mirrors may also confuse and so are better not placed over the washbasin.
And finally, a WAY OUT sign on the appropriate door please. If there are 2 exits, add the destination to the WAY OUT sign.
