Dozens of people flocked to a sold-out event highlighting vital work being undertaken locally to assist those affected by dementia.
The showcase was staged by the Bromley Dementia Friendly Community (Bromley DFC), which raises awareness of the support available across the borough. It focused on the nine-year-old group’s work both as a team of dedicated volunteers and in collaboration with a collection of partner organisations.
Among those attending last week’s event was the Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Dr David Jefferys. He provided the closing speech, reinforcing his passion for supporting those affected by dementia.
The key-note speaker was Laura Cook, the Clinical Programme Lead – Ageing Well and Clinical Networks, at NHS England, London Region. Representatives from the Young Onset Dementia Group also gave a presentation, revealing the unique technique they have devised to share their talents and to inform those present about the condition from their own lived experiences.
Meanwhile several examples were given of instances where local businesses and groups have collaborated to provide dementia friendly initiatives. These include dementia chair exercises (MyTime Active and Memory Box Dementia Café), the Connections Café (Quest Soul Theatre and Radfield Home Care) and the monthly Bromley Dementia Friendly Community Networking Breakfast (hosted by Thackray Williams LLP).
Honorary BDFC President Angela Clayton-Turner went on to announce the criteria for a new Dementia Friendly Award – named after Cora Phillips, a co-founder of the Alzheimer’s Society who held their first meeting in Bromley.
